1970-1974

Paleontology and Paleoanthropology related Philatelic items issued in the years 1970-1974: prehistoric animals and their footprints, fossils, including petrified wood, Neanderthals, paleontologists and contributors to Paleontology science.

Introduction

From the 1960s through the late 1980s, several small Middle Eastern countries (often referred to by philatelists as “Sand Dunes” states) produced stamps in large quantities covering popular themes such as space, sports, and famous personalities. These issues were primarily intended for collectors rather than for actual postal use and were often not available within the issuing countries for mailing purposes. Covers with postally-used examples of these stamps are exceedingly rare. All such letters known to the author of the website are covers cancelled on the day of issue, which were sent to some Philatelic Agencies or Magazines.
In 1971 and 1972, two such “Dunes” issues featured prehistoric animals, those of Fujeira and Manama, respectively (the exact issue date of the Manama stamps is not recorded in the major stamps catalogues).
These stamps are marked with a grey background below, indicating undesired items.
