Six commemorative postmarks of different cities introduced for the FDC: Moscow, St. Petersburg, Orenburg,
Saratov, Yaroslavl, Sevastopol. [1] According to "MARKA" company, who is responsible for production of stamps and other philatelic materials in Russia, the cities for cancellation were selected according to the areas where the remains of animals depicted on stamps are found. The cancellation of every issued stamp is carried out in Moscow, regardless of the issue topic. In St. Petersburg, as in a city of federal significance, therefore most cancellations are also carried out in the city. The approval of cities for cancellation, except for Moscow, is also associated with applications from the main post offices of cities.
[1] Sevastopol is the largest city on the Crimean Peninsula and a major Black Sea port. Since annexing Crimea in 2014, the Russian Federation has administered Sevastopol as a federal city. Nevertheless, Ukraine and most of the UN member countries continue to regard Sevastopol as a city with special status within Ukraine. |
