The Dominican Republic
Natural History Museums and fossils on stamps of the Dominican Republic
The Dominican Republic is a sovereign state occupying the eastern
two thirds of the island of Hispaniola, in the Greater Antilles archipelago in the Caribbean region.
The western third of the island is occupied by the nation of Haiti, making Hispaniola one of two Caribbean
islands, along with Saint Martin, that are shared by two countries.
Both by area and population the Dominican Republic is the second-largest Caribbean nation
(after Cuba),
with 48,445 square kilometers and 10.4 million people, of which approximately three million live in
the metropolitan area of Santo Domingo, the capital city.
Though long known for agriculture and mining, the economy is now dominated by services. [R1]
The Dominican Republic became independent from Spain in 1865 and produced its own stamps from that date. [R2]
So far there are no stamps of dinosaurs or prehistoric animals.
Notes:
[1] Natural History (1st mini sheet on the upper row) and Archaeological (2nd mini sheet on the upper row) museums are depicting on two Mini Sheets of the set. One stamp of Natural History Museum shows the building of the museum with dinosaur image on it. [R3] Fossils of some animals are shown on stamps of Archaeological Museum.
