Six commemorative postmarks of different cities introduced for the FDC: Moscow, St. Petersburg, Orenburg, Saratov, Yaroslavl, Sevastopol. [1]

According to "MARKA" company, who is responsible for production of stamps and other philatelic materials in Russia, the cities for cancellation were selected according to the areas where the remains of animals depicted on stamps are found. The cancellation of every issued stamp is carried out in Moscow, regardless of the issue topic. In St. Petersburg, as in a city of federal significance, therefore most cancellations are also carried out in the city. The approval of cities for cancellation, except for Moscow, is also associated with applications from the main post offices of cities.

  • Moscow - main Paleontologic Museum of Russia located in Moscow. Fossils of all animals depicting on the stamps are on the show there.
  • St. Petersburg - St. Petersburg was a capital of Russia between 1712 and 1918 and hosted the main Paleontologic collection of the country during this time.

The second species of Russian Plisoaurs, Pliosaurus irgisensis found in March 1933 in Savelievsky mine, near Saratov city too. Unfortunately its fossils are destroyed due to bad storage condition during World War II.
  • Yaroslavl - fossils of Mammoth found in many locations across Russia include Yaroslavl region, but the most important discoveries of Mammoth fossils made in Siberia at Yakutsk region.
  • Sevastopol [1] - fossils of Megaloceras (great deer) found in many locations across Russia as well as in occupied Crimean Peninsula. [1]
The cancelation there is probably political motivated. The most important discoveries of Megaloceras fossils in Russia made near Sapozhek town in Ryzan region.
Notes:
[1] Sevastopol is the largest city on the Crimean Peninsula and a major Black Sea port.
Since annexing Crimea in 2014, the Russian Federation has administered Sevastopol as a federal city.
Nevertheless, Ukraine and most of the UN member countries continue to regard Sevastopol as a city with special status within Ukraine.
